Though most will say that this wasn't even the original Stadium to begin with, it still feels like the end of an era; the end of something historic that dates back to the days of Ruth and Gehrig. Was wondering what special memories anyone had here and what your thoughts are about the New Yankee Stadium (did everyone see the photos of the place being built online at The Daily News?).

My oldest memory is going back to around 1970 when my grandfather brought me to see a game. I think it may have been a day game but I was so young I don't even remember now! Now this is very odd because my grandfather was a big Brooklyn Dodger fan and then a NY Met fan, so him taking me to the Stadium to see the hated Yankees was a big deal for him, and for me.

Well, it was quite a game to remember! Bobby Murcer hit a home run in the bottom of the ninth! Fitting to recall this now, huh? It was such a great moment because even my "Pop" was standing and cheering! The even odder fact was that I had no idea what had happened or why everyone was going crazy, standing and cheering! I remember the ball hooking down the line but I never saw it leave the park! While Pops was standing and clapping I asked him "what happened", and he said "Murcer hit a homerun to win the game!"

My Pops died in 1982, and as we speak, Bobby is fighting for his life.

The stadium definitely had a different feel to it after the remodel was done.

Funny, Yogi was recently asked about how he felt about Yankee Stadium being torn down. He said, "I don't know, I never played there." To many, somewhat myself included, the stadium was gone in the 70's, when they did that massive rebuild. It lost so much of what it had been.

Its tough to see it go though. While it isn't the same stadium, the field was there. The new stadium will be on different ground, less seats, yet again.

Sometimes you just can't get home again.

What a nice memory, Brian. Thanks for sharing that. :)

Sorry about your dad--he must've been quite young.

We had a couple of threads earlier talking about Yankee Stadium in case you're interested:

Not my dad, Charmaine, but my grandfather. Thanks for the note anyway. I was looking for a topic that would be about the stadium yesterday but couldn't find one -- guess I didn't look hard enough! "Rookie"!

Oops! Sorry about that. I kinda was wondering why you'd be talking about your dad since the story was about your grandfather. But, Pops is what you called him, I see.

Anyway, how's your dad?

Dad left me and my 5 brothers when I was little and my grandfather was the major male figure in our life. I've seen dad from time to time, he lives in Illinois, but haven't seen or spoken in 6-7 years. Long story. :-)

Brian, I know what it's like to live in a separated house myself, grew up in one.

I was left with sort of torn loyalties. With the way things ended, I knew my dad was probably more to blame, but I always tried to find the good in him.

His side wasn't the one my Yankee blood came from, though

Nonetheless, I can sort of understand what you're going through. But hey, not bad to have the wisdom of a grandfather in your life everyday growing up, right?

I was gonna do one of these to myself...

because in my attempts to show respect, I felt like I instead caused myself to pry!

But, you guys seem pretty open about this, so now I don't feel so bad for asking.
I still feel bad that you had to go through all of that, though. :(

Sweet, Char, the sentiment is well taken, but he's been gone since I was 8 and it is no big deal to talk about or anything. The difference between myself and Tip is there were no sides to choose from, since Dad was in a different state. It's always seemed normal, the situation, and I've never felt weird or shy about talking about it. My Father in Heaven has more than made up for what I lacked from him. --> sorry, not a religious forum Image

Good to hear that, though--that's what's most important. :)

Yeah, I guess without a religion forum, I'm not gonna be able to do this to you...OR Al!
