Cashman shouldn't have said that publicly. What purpose did it serve?

Certainly not.
Bernie may have been insulted by the spring invitation, but that part of it is a business and they obviously felt he needed to earn a spot on the team in 2007 rather than be guaranteed one--which I think is fine. Bernie should realize that and either retire or accept the invitation.
The Yankees though should most definitely honor him with a Bernie Williams day---but then again, maybe they will if and when he declares officially that he is retired.
But Cash shouldn't say stuff like he said. Bernie released an album in 2003 and still had good seasons after that. That's ridiculous to say he was distracted by a parallel career.

Also---he played as much as he did in 2006 because of injuries. I think he put up pretty good replacement numbers. Who else did they have that should have been played instead?

I was turned off by Cashman making those statements. Especially after seeing Bernie's reactions to it. Frankly, I agree with Bernie. While his level of play wasn't as high, age catching up and all, I doubt the music was the cause.

There could be a reason why Cashman isn't the voice of the Yankees. He sometimes sticks his foot in his mouth.

Agree with all of you. It was a huge mistake by Cashman making such a statement.

On 2006, it was not just Joe's decision to give Bernie some playing time. It was because of the plague of injuries.

Anyway, his 2006 stats were not that bad. 118 H. 12 HR. 61 RBI's. .281 BA. Cash, you should close your mouth. You're talking about a true Yankee. And that's not the way anyone can talk about a true Yankee.

Cash should not have mentioned it.
Bernie should let it go.
No good will come from either.

I think Bernie will be pulling a Yogi here. I think Cashman made a big error with this, and its not going to sit well with fans and some of the players.

It's like Cash and Bernie are Brer Bear and Brer Wolf, fighting over that Tar Baby. No matter who wins, all are smeared.

I used to love Brer Rabbit. The Tar Baby was one of my favorite stories. 8)

Yep.

And what is with Bernie refusing to announce that he is retired? Does he think he's going to play again?

I love the story too. It really does teach a good lesson. Too bad that story, along with Song of the South has been branded as too racist to let people watch anymore.

You guys really are old! :)
I never had heard of Brer Rabbit or Brer Bear until about 10 years ago when my father spoke of it. He loved it too.

Never did see it myself.

John, I think I'm a year younger than you. I was born in 1976. You were born in '75, is that right?

So, WHAT DO YOU MEAN, "You guys are really old!?"
