I'm going to throw an idea out there.

The Yankees need to trade Jose Molina.

Molina has been a great back up for the Yankees. His defense has been great and he works well with the pitchers. But, with the emergence of Cervelli, he's actually an impediment. Cervelli needs to be on the major league team, not in AAA. He needs to continue to prove he can be an effective catcher at the ML level, and that he can be Posada's replacement in the future. With Molina in the way, he won't have as much of an opportunity to do so.

I'm sure there is some club out there that has need of a back up catcher. I say trade Molina now and get something for him. His contract is up at the end of the year anyway.

Thoughts?

Interesting point. The thing is, what do you do if Posada happens to get hurt again? Cervelli is good but I don't think he's up to being the everyday starting catcher just yet. It can't hurt to have that extra depth.

That is the one concern. Cash is in AAA if we were to need him, I believe. The biggest thing, in the end, that we would lose if Posada were to go down is his bat. Molina isn't really known for his bat anyway, so I don't know that we'd be losing a whole lot there. On the other hand, despite his low batting average Molina has done very well in the clutch for the Yankees.

Is Molina even healthy yet? I have no problem trading him and having Cervlli back up Jorge, and playing everyday if he has to. To worry about a 3rd catcher is scary - that is a bit too much to lose sleep over but just goes to show you that we look to have every nook and cranny of possible scenarios covered.
