I can hardly believe it. While I know he has been around for a long time, I really thought he would be back for one more year. He looked really well out there this past year. I did hear that he was looking for a good receiver to help out, and they were looking to snag Moss, but that didn't happen.

17 years. That is a long time to QB. Favre will be missed.

Even more incredible is the number of consecutive games he played. To me, with that sport, the accomplishment is even more impressive than Ripkin. While there aren't any close to the same number of games, baseball isn't as tough on the players as football is.

GB just got a little chillier.

Wow, shocked! A year or two ago I wouldn't have been but after the resurgent year he had I thought for sure he'd come back to try to win one more. He carried my fantasy team last year so he'll be missed in more ways than one.

Well, I am as surprised as you guys then.

What I can't believe is that he goes out with his last pass being a horrible interception that blew a chance at a Super Bowl.

Green Bay's a good team, but I don't think they're going to win 13 games again with Aaron Rodgers behind center.

Favre was a great one, no question. But he better enjoy those records while he can. Before you know it, they will be the property of one Peyton Williams Manning.

As our resident Packers fan, I'll weigh in.

Right after the loss I figured Favre would be back, but as time has gone by since then I've been doubting it more and more. I wasn't horribly shocked to hear this.

Favre will certainly be missed, and it's sad to see my favorite football player hang it up. I've never known anything other than Favre under center in Green Bay. But I'm glad he went out on top of his game and didn't fade away into obscurity, a la Bernie Williams. This is the way I'd want to go.

As to the Packers' future...I think it's still pretty bright. Aaron Rodgers looked good in the mop-up duty he had this year, and this is a very, very young team. They won't win 13 games next year, but the playoffs are still a realistic possibility, with the solid defense, glut of wide receivers, some salary cap room for the offseason, and whatever they get out of the draft.

Eh...I always thought Favre was a little overrated.

Okay, before you all yell "Heresy!", let me explain. Sure, he did a lot of great things and was a great quarterback. But how many times did he have to lead his team to a come-back win because he threw a few stupid picks earlier in the game? I think he could have been a lot better had he shown a few more smarts. Sure, he has the record for most touchdowns. But he also has the record for most interceptions.

Regardless, football lost a very marketable and classy player with his retirement. And I don't really blame him for his timing, either. He had a great year and was oh-so-close to another Superbowl. Better to go out on top, like Karl said.

Until he unretires, anyway. Wouldn't surprise me if he does.

I can agree rob, and I think his big rep is based on the cowboy, gunslinger label attached to him. A guy who makes rediculously amazing plays is going to get his props, and also throw some stupid picks in the process of trying to make a big play. His games played streak is sick, and Tip is right, Manning is gonna break it.

On the other hand, you gotta hand it to a guy who puts his team in a hole and has the grapes to not back off and come through in the end with the game on the line. Like Reggie who struckout alot early, it's the late game theatrics that makes a legacy.

The thing with Favre is that he dared to be daring. That is what makes for greatness. Daring to make stupid plays and having them sometimes pay off.

Think about how many games in a row he started as well. The man is a tank, a sherman tank. The current player is over 100 games behind him. Thats a lot of years yet to play without missing a start.

I am not so positive that anyone is going to break that games played streak. Manning has a long way to go for that, and frankly, in football, that is simply amazing. THink about it. Its over 7 years to go to beat it.

It seems that Brett might have been feeling it not getting the player he really wanted to add to the team. There is a slight possibility that he will come back, but I think its doubtful, personally.

Tip, I don't mean to take anything away from Manning, he is tough, no doubt, but Favre put up some really tough numbers to match.

Peyton might break some of the passing records, but no way no how does he break the streak of games played.
Sorry to see Favre go, he was fun to watch.

Yeah, I'm not sure about the games-played streak. Peyton's got a long way to go, but if he hasn't missed any time up to this point, how can you say he doesn't have a chance? He's got a great feel for the pass rush and avoiding bad sacks. He just doesn't get hurt (Knocking (hard) on wood)

But all the other major passing records? He'll get them. Remember, based on what Favre did, Peyton's only about halfway through. Lot of numbers still ahead of him. He's the best there is.

The thing with Farve is he played injured in so many games and still played at a high level. And the "knock on wood" truly amazing thing about Manning is he never has that chance because he seems to never even get injured. I've remembered him limping a time or two, or having a hand banged up, but there's a big difference between playing hurt and playing injured.

I'd still take Brady over Peyton but it's closer now in my mind than when we talked about it months ago, and after Brady's less than sterling playoff run. They're both so great it's really hard to argue either way.

Tip, I think any player has a shot at matching or surpassing any record. Trouble is, those records that Favre put up went with one very long career. How many players in football go 17 years?

Maybe Manning will do it. Still, its a heck of a lot to go.

It would be stunning if Peyton did not get these passing records.

The games played streak, I don't really care. Long way away.

But he's in great position on the others, the yards, etc. Colts brass will always make sure he has the best offensive weapons around him. Team wins 10 games every year. Things are set up quite well for the records to change hands.

It could very well happen that the passing records will be broken by Manning. Its also a long way away though, and so much can happen in those years. Defense not protecting well enough just once can change the whole chances of it happening.

Don't get me wrong, I am not wishing it on any player. 17 years in a sport like football is crazy. Then again, so is running around in a T-shirt and shorts - or even sometimes just shorts while its snowing and blowing is crazy too.
