I'm thinking Hughes and Kennedy, and probably Aceves, maybe even Coke, will all begin at SWB; partly for playing time, partly for 25-man roster construction. Maybe even Robertson and Albaladejo.

Melky is out of options, BTW, so I look for the OF gang to be: Damon/Melky/Nady with Swisher and Matsui, and Brett in SWB unless he has an all-world spring.

I am hoping that Aceves gets a chance to shine. I really liked what I saw from him last season.

As expected, Girardi has announced the rotation order will be:

CC
Wang
AJ
Andy
Joba

Surely Joe reads our comments, Al.

Good to confirm that it's Wang and not Burnett the number 2. First of all, because Wand deserves it. And second, because this way opposite hitters will have to face a sinker baller between two flame throwers, and that will help us a lot.

I think the proposed rotation makes a lot of sense. We've talked before about how important it is in series to have pitchers who have different looks. Splitting up the lefties, splitting up the harder throwers, all has its place in that.

If you look at how this rotation balances no matter which pitcher is the lead off of the series they play, it really shows the sense of it. Take it if Joba starts the first game... then you have a lefty going after him. Both hard throwers, but from different sides.

Having some of the young arms who can slide in for spot starts may crimp that a bit, but if you look at the Red Sox championship team rotations, you also see the variety of pitching styles. It keeps the batters a little off balance as it takes a bit to adjust.

A smart manager would... so maybe Joe does...

How are they doing so far?

ERA - WHIP - SOs - IPs - W-L

CC - 3.57 - 1.642 - 10 - 17.2 - 1-1
Wang - 34.50 - 4.833 - 2 - 6 - 0-3
AJ - 2.70 - .900 - 15 - 13.1 - 2-0
Andy - 2.51 - .767 - 10 - 14.1 - 1-0
Joba - 5.06 - 1.500 - 9 - 10.2 - 0-0

Bullpen

ERA - WHIP - SO - IPs - W-L

Veras 8.53 - 1.263 - 5 - 6.1 - 0-1
Bruney 3.00 - .500 - 12 - 6 - 2-0
Coke 6.75 - 1.875 - 6 - 5.1 - 0-1
Albaladejo 3.68 - 1.227 - 2 - 7.1 - 0-0
Edwar 8.44 - 2.625 - 8 - 5.1 - 0-0
Marte 21.00 - 6.600 - 1 - 3 - 0-0

Rivera 0.00 - .750 - 5 - 4 - 0-0 - 3 Svs

Somehow, I think Bruney and Rivera are going to get a lot of work moving forward... and Bruney has won the setup role.

Marte. Has he REALLY regressed to being nothing more than a LOOGY?

I would send down Marte and Veras, and call up Robertson and Aceves.

Vera$ is out of options, sadly. If we expose him, erratic and all, his arm would ensure that some team even more desperate would snap him up :-(

Marte is on the DL, acording to Peter Abraham.

Not much of a loss, I would think. He's not much more than a lefty specialist anyway, and he hasn't pitched since last Saturday against Boston.

Unfortunately, whoever replaces him will probably rot in the pen just as much as Robertson and some of the other young guys brought up this year. Girardi is exactly like Torre in that respect.

At least under Torre, everyone had a role, even if that involved sitting and rotting on the end of the bench. Now, it seems as if Girardi is drawing straws to decide who he brings in.

Marte's replacement is Anthony Clagett. Just what this team needs, another inexperienced reliever to be thrown into that mess.

Well, the experienced guys aren't getting it done. Maybe it is time to look at an inexperienced guy or two or three until they find someone who can get it done.

Given that Rivera has seemed mortal, that Bruney is injured... and that the rest of the bullpen has simply sucked... the guys arguing that Joba should be in the pen have to be given some creedence...

I think they just need to find the guys that have the mentality to be relievers... that bulldog go after you with the stuff to go with it. Joba has it, Bruney has it, Mariano has it (although his stuff is starting to show signs of not being the overwelming stuff it once was).. Edwar doesn't have it, Marte doesn't have it, Veras doesn't have it.

If Hughes continues to pitch like he did in his first outing... and Wang can get his stuff together and come back the pitcher he was 2 years ago...I will be in favor of moving Chamberlain to the bullpen... and if Mariano blows many more saves, I just might favor Joba being the closer.
