Hey Charm, what's up?

That's my question to YOU! Good to see you here--it's been awhile.

Yeah, Id rather see NY spend money on Teixeira. At least they'd be getting a quality athlete with a high quality presence and certainly younger--with better years ahead of him. Manny is on the downside at 36 and is looking to cash in one last time. If he got 3 years, he'd be pushing 40----he knows this is his last go round and Im sure has already told Boras that he needs to sweeten the pot for this last deal. He wants 4, but I bet he settle for 2 or 3 years when the list of pursuers is not very long.
I hope NY sits out on this one. Go for Mark and move Swisher to the outfield.

Hi, Johnny!

Manny? Addition by Subtraction. Look how many titles we won with Sheff, and he hit the ball with a vengeance. No thank you. [Betcha our travelling secretary is nervous, though ;-)]

Well, this all seems to be a moot point now that Teixeira is a YANKEEE (Gotta read that with a LOUD SCREAMING VOICE)...

Some thoughts on the Man-Ram...
He is entertaining.
He is a tremendous hitter, though A-Rod IS better. Manny just gets more lovin' because of him being a part of the nation... (This lovin' will change now to pure hatred for all things Manny because of last season).
He would have been a shorter term contract.
He would be motivated because he is chasing 600 HR, and he has a bug up his rear for the Boston Red Sox.

I really didn't like Manny at any time. His actions after HRs I found to be a turn off. While a lot of players do watch a bit of their big hits, he WAY overdoes it.

He would quit on his team as well as be the ignition for team. Too often he just would stop playing when he was needed. Boston hate? Just his way? In any event, that means you really can't count on him, except maybe in the post season.

His actions last season in Boston seem to paint him very poorly. I filter some of that, a decent portion actually, on the usual crapping on by Boston for their former players. Though, it needs to be noted that the RS really didn't get value for what he could produce. They dumped him big.

It would have helped take away some of the press coverage that ARod gets. That may be good, may be very bad.

Anyway, welcome to NY Teixeira... a much better signing that ManRam would have been.

My reactions:
First, I'm not overly surprised. We all kinda suspected it, didn't we? More with Ortiz, yeah, but Manny is no surprise.
Then a little anger, knowing that he was probably using them to beat up on the Yankees all those years. Yeah, is anyone else buying the "doctor's prescription" claim?
And relating to that, I'll feel some smugness watching Red Sox fans react to this, and try to claim that they're still somehow holier than the Yankees when it comes to steroids.
Though really, it's just another disaster for baseball, which is sad. But at least this time it happened to someone I'm not going to miss.

A doctor's prescription that he thought would be "OK"?? I mean, my goodness...if that's his excuse then you'd think he would've had half a brain (oh wait...we're talking Manny here) to make sure it wasn't on the official banned substance list.

Do we get to know what this "medication" is?

It will be interesting to see how this news affects the best team in baseball.

Before I saw Pete Abe's post on it, I thought that the timing of this was perfect for A-Rod's return. Like Pete said, it'll take the heat off of him somewhat.

Also, saw this link posted by a commenter over there that explains what Manny was most likely guilty of taking.

My students told me about this during 7th period today. My first reaction: "Oh @#&$! I've got to change my fantasy roster!"

In all seriousness, I'm not surprised. As I told my students, I think the majority of players from the Dominican have used steroids at some point in the past, knowingly or not. And his little disclaimer about passing 15 previous tests? Whatever. We know that a lot of those guys use masking agents, which work most of the time. This just happened to be the time the masking agent failed.

I was at a restaurant with a few friends and this came across the crawl along the bottom of the ESPN screen, and I just started laughing. There was another Yankee fan in the group, so we had quite a bit of fun with this.
