I'm not sure, but it could be an upgrade. See. We lose a young player who could develop. But, after last season, Melky's value went dramaticaly down.
We get a veteran fielder, who strikes out a lot. His BA is pretty much similar than Cabrera's, but Cameron hits a lot more homers and, the important thing, his RBI's level is much higher than Melky's.
Both are very good on the field, with huge range and a powerful arm.
Cameron will be on the last year of his contract. And, usually, that means a lot. He knows he needs a very good season, since this will be his last chance to get a good contract as a FA. Plus, I've read he's a very good friend of CC and A-Rod. And with his experience living in NY (let's remember he played two years for the Mets), he could help in CC's transition and make it easier for the very big lefty.
So, again, I think it's an upgrade, but not an outstanding aquisition.

I'm not sure it's an upgrade... and I'd hate to see it happen and Melky turn into one of those players that we go "we should have kept him".

I think Cameron is a slight downgrade as a fielder (slight). As Jorge noted, his batting average isn't significantly different than Melky's last year (an acknowledged bad year for the Melkman). He may hit a few more homers, but I'm not sure he'll produce the same numbers of RBIs as he has in the past because he'll hit much lower in the order (like probably 9th).

And given his age, I'm not sure that just because he knows he needs a good year will translate into him delivering a good year.

I'm not convinced of the value of trading a youngster with potential (admittadly unknown) for a one-year overpaid player that isn't a significant upgrade.

I can't say I'm enamored with this either.

Though the short-term production might be a little better, Melky ultimately has a lot more upside, even if we didn't see much of that last year. It also blocks Gardner and Jackson for a year, barring injury.

The first thing that ran through my mind when I saw this was "Kenny Lofton." We don't need another experience like that.

After looking at Cameron's career stats, I think it's a lousy trade. Trade a 24 year-old switch hitter for a 36 year old in the last year of his contract? Melky's career average is actually better than Cameron's.

Plus, Mike strikes out an awful lot. I think we are seeing if we can land Manny for LF, which would move Damo back to CF and make Cameron unnecessary.

Personally, I think we should go with Gardy in center and Damon in left. Build up that sample size a little, but I think Brett is better at bat than he has shown so far [and we've seen he can track down most any batted ball in the field].

It seems we can forget about it. So, it will be Melky/Gardner our CF. To be honest, I don't have a problem with that.

Everything I've read on Gardner seems to say that he does take time to adjust. Yes, he struggled at the plate last season; but towards the end, he did show signs of making the adjustment. You have to give guys a chance. You can't just give them a couple of weeks, or a month, and say they are a bust.

Good point, Rob - the ol' small sample size strikes again. I was really impressed by Gardner at the end of last season, and I think he is just the kind of spark plug we need [sorta like Mickey Rivers of yore].

Can't say I am sorry to see this trade talk die. From what I hear, the Yankees are re-thinking this because Melky did well this winter. If Melky can bounce back and show more development of what it looked like, OR if Gardner can fill the role I think its a better longer term move than trading for Cameron.

Now the Yankees have Nady, Swisher, Damon, Matsui and one of Gardner or Melky to play outfield. This might have been a move that was designed to throw attention off the move for Teixeira.
