GE does do comparisons of profit percentage (note that I used winning %, not just raw wins).

Retire the number: A-Rod, Jeter, Mo.
Give him a plaque: Jorge, Bernie, Torre, maybe O'Neill

I think it would be rash to retire Torre's number so soon. Perhaps, if we look back on his tenure 20-30 years from now and see no one in the modern era has come close his accomplishments, it'll happen. But for now, no.

Um, Goat, Cy retired in 1911.
No one wore numbers until years later.

So then, his number is retired? :D

Still. Why wasn't Babe Ruth's number retired across the league then? I know HE wore a number! :D

I really don't like the idea of retiring a number all together. In certain cases maybe the League can make the players team retire the number if they haven't already. The history is there, that should be enough. Keep it for a team special honor.

I agree with the Goat. If Jackie and Clemente can have baseball-wide numbers retirement, then so should the Babe. He may not have spearheaded minorities in baseball [although, some claim HE was in fact of a minority ethnicity], but he singlehandedly sparked the revival of our game from the dead-ball, black socks doldrums and put it on the path to again being America's Pastime.

But seriously, it's about time numbers start getting un-retired. No disrespect to those heroes, it's just that I can't imagine triple digits :-)

Babe Ruth was an American icon no matter which way you spin it.

No question he will always be THE singular face of the game.

So in lieu of all that, I agree with you guys, sort of a mystery #3 doesn't get more recognition than he does.
